Description

In the Los Padres National Forest off Grade Valley Road in Lockwood Valley, Sheep Creek Trail (20W18) is a long-abandoned route along the Yellowjacket OHV Trail (21W04). The lower portion of this route appeared on the 1995 Lockwood Valley topo and traces of the route can be seen on Google Earth.

This trail can be followed for two and a half miles to an isolated campsite on the edge of a dry meadow.  Beyond the campsite, the canyon becomes choked with brush.  It is an empty landscape still recovering from the Day Fire almost twenty years ago and is rarely visited.  We will have lunch at the campsite and maybe do a little exploration before heading back.  840 feet of climb.  There is dispersed camping near the trailhead for those who wish to stay overnight.

We will meet on the northeast corner of the Flying J Travel Center, near the flying eagle sculpture 42810 Frazier Mountain Park Rd. Lebec, CA 93243 (34.817393110851, -118.88556950917128).  From there, we’ll take Frazier Mountain Park Road 6.7 miles before turning left onto Lockwood Valley Road.  10.5 miles takes us to a left turn onto Grade Valley Road.  Follow Grade Valley Road, which turns into a dirt road, 2.1 miles to San Guillermo Road. Follow San Guillermo Road 1.7 miles to the Yellowjacket Trailhead (34.69612647403043, -119.09737046405601)
