North of DeAnza Springs is an area of granodiorite boulders that have been tilted towards the southwest and carved into monolithic slabs with deep vertical fractures. Welcome to the Maze! Navigation through this area is difficult, but passages have been found. On this trip we will weave in and out among the boulders to make our way to the Top of the Maze where we can observe the geological chaos all around us. It is a 4.5-mile round trip with a short section of serious boulder hopping to get to the final summit. 600 feet of climb over 2.25 miles of mostly easy hiking. With luck, we will see desert wildflowers in bloom.
We will meet at 8:30 am at the DeAnza Springs Resort Clubhouse, 951 Carrizo Gorge Rd, Jacumba Hot Springs, CA. (32.654530, -116.182676). Once we’re off DeAnza Springs property on the trail, we will be able to disrobe.
